"Our Vision is to create a new, distinctive and connected, sustainable mixed use development, set in a townscape that responds to the existing setting of Bishop's Stortford".

(Martin Perry, Henderson Global Investors)

Henderson Global Investors is investing £105 million in Old River Lane to enhance Bishop's Stortford town centre.

The site comprises 3.5 hectares and is currently occupied by East Hertfordshire Council's offices known as 'The Causeway', East Hertfordshire District 'pay and display' car park, Waitrose car park, three residential properties and the United Reformed Church's hall.

The new retail street will comprises of a mix of retail and restaurant uses at ground and first floors with residential apartments above. The site also provides the opportunity to incorporate a new department store, cinema and hotel.

The existing buildings in the town centre comprise a wide mix of architectural styles and the town benefits from a wealth of heritage assets. The site is located within the town's conservation area and the scheme has been designed to enhance this particular part of the town which is currently dominated by surface car parking.

The design of the scheme will complement the existing architecture in the town and respond to the historic urban grain. There is also the opportunity to further enhance the setting of existing listed buildings through the creation of a new square in front of the United Reformed Church.
